I was one of those people that was the first to arrive in the morning, worked through my lunch hours, and was the last to leave at the end of a long day. While running late to meet my husband for our daily commute home, I noticed my train coming through the tunnel and ran so as not to miss it. My knee, which had been troubling me for years, gave way and I tumbled head-first into the oncoming train. Fellow riders caught me and averted a disaster, but I was pretty shaken up. When I met my husband that day, he thought I had been held up! My coat was torn, my hair was a mess and I was crying hysterically. His first thought was that someone had accosted me! After explaining what had happened, he encouraged me to see my orthopedic doctor the very next day. A total knee replacement was the only way I was going to get any relief from the crippling arthritis in my knee so we scheduled it for the following month. It was during the pre-op physical that my breast cancer was discovered. TALK ABOUT A WAKE-UP CALL! Once I completed my cancer surgery and treatments, I had the total knee replacement.
After 30 years of working in Washington, D.C., and after my breast surgery and subsequent cancer treatments, I decided that I wanted to do something different with my life. This re-evaluation and reassessment of what was important to me brought me to the realization that I wanted to do something more fulfilling and which was cancer-related. I AM A CANCER SURVIVOR, my mother is an 8-year cancer survivor, my younger sister a 5-year cancer survivor, and my father died at the young age of 42 of liver cancer. This, then, is what God meant for me to do all along! I call my shop, "I'm Still Me," which is the phrase we often used to calm the anxieties and concerns of our children and grandchildren, as they related to our diagnosis.
